THE AMERICAN CUP COMPETITORS.
The Valkyrie and Defender, after all, are likely to meet again, thought not in American waters. Mr W. K. Vanderbilt; one of the syndicates at whose expense the American yacht was built, has purchased her out and out, and will sail her next year at Cowes, and in some of the principal races under the auspices of British yacht clubs. There is fine racing at Cannes every spring, the most interesting of the matches this year having been those between the Ailsa jaud the Britannia. Later in the i season the contests in the Clyde and at Cowes brought cut tbe crack American yacht Vigilaht. But brilliant as last season's yachting confessed iy was, it would becompletely eclipsed if such crafts as the Britannia, the Defender, the Valkyrie, and tbe AJlsa were to be brought side by side intho Solent. It is quite certain that the Prince of Wales will race his yacht against anything afloat. The owner or' the Ailsa will not be behind, snd if the Defender crosses the Atlantic the Valkyrie cannot shrink
from such an obvious challenge.
