A NATIVE QUARREL.

♦ A West Coast paper says : — During the last few days there has been some rather I serious quarrelling amongst the tribes at Parewanui, which on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday resulted in free fights. The quarrel is over the right of certain parties to train their horses on the Parewanui racecouae, and an attempt to eject the supposed offenders. On Friday the quarrel reached its climax, when the "big talk" culminated in a free fight. The belligerents, headed by Wirihana Hunia and Mohi Ropiha fought on horseback with sticks. The fight was started at the back of the Parewanui bush, and during the struggle the parties traversed the sandhills to the back of the Parwanui school. Some very severe cuts and bruises were received in the encounter, Wilson Hunia especially being badly cut about the head. The racehorse Marama and two young bloods were injured in the fight. Constable Gleeson was sent for, and on arrival found nearly all the Natives on. tKo disputed ground, and a lively discussion going on. He ordered them to disperse at once, or he would send for assistance and have them all arrested. They dispersed, but on Sunday and Monday were out again with firearms and ammunition. Yesterday, however, one of the parties came to Marton to take out summonses, so very likely the affair is about over.
