Christchurch, Monday. —A. most disgraceful scene occurred at a meeting Mr MacLachlan's M.H.E. at South Bakaia on Eriday night. The member for Ashburton was under the influence of liquor to such an extent that km was unable to deliver his speech. / J No arrangements had been made for a Chairman and after an -unseemly attack by MacMchlan bn^a /resident who said he would have presided hM he been asked, that gentleman took the chair but in plain terms, told the! member of his condition and advised him to abandon the meeting. , MacLachlan elected to go on, however but after an unsuccessful attempt to commence his speech he gave in and the audience, among whom were many ladies, left the hall, the, scene terminating by the member falling off the stage. ./ , -■
