A STEANGE WEDDING.
-' ♦ ■ Taken to the Altar m Hand Cuffs. The marriage of criminals under most extraordinary circumstances has taken place in Paris. The bridegroom was a man named Ortez, convicted of anarchy and burglary, and sentenced to 20 years' penaal servitude in New Caledonia, and the bride a female prisoner named Antoinette Cazils. The bride and bridegroom were yesterday taken to the church, where the ceremony was preformed. The couple were in charge of four detectives. At the altar the handcuffs were removed from the prisoners' wrists and the marriage ceremony was proceeded with. The pair then made their confession to the Abbe Cartier, who reassured them with prayer. The prisoners — bridegroom and his bride — both weeping bitterly, returned to the altar, and the marriage \ ceremony was then concluded. The abbe, addressing the newlymarried couple, expressed the wish I that the married life commenced under such strange circumstances would lead to a bright and happy future, and bring about their social restoration. The pair kissed, and the bride, taking a bunch of violets from her breast, handed her husband half the flowers. The handcuffs were replaced, and the pair were removed to prison, the husband to await transportation to New Caledonia for 20 years, while his wife was taken to the St. Lazare prison for women. A big shark was caught at Lyttelton, and taken to Christchurch for exhibition. For this purpose they put it on a high stand, but the weather was warm, and the shark got higher and higher, till the inhabitants of the neighborhood felt inclined to get lower and lower — down an artesian well, for instance — to escape the height to which the shark had got. At last an appeal was made to the local authority for protection. The mistake the exhibitors made was in imagining that a shark kept for a week wouldn't go "higher" than any ordinary nose could stand. The best medicine known in Sander and Sons Eucalypti Extract.
