TAURANGA RACES.
Race day (Monday last) brake witn anything bat a promising aspect, and shortly after eight o'clock a heavy shower of rain fell, and the sky became overcast and black. However about ten o'clock the clouds were blown away to seaward, and the sun shone forth, and with the exception of a rather trying wind the weather was all that could be desired. During the morning the town presented a very animated appearance, and the Opotiki Band played several selections from the balcony of the Commercial Hotel. Traps, buggies, brakes and even the lowly dray was pressed into service to convey people to the course. Before noon there were a vary large number of people^ present [and soon the horses were being I walked about the course. No games were allowed, and those who wished to speculate had resource to ' the totalisator, bookies or sweep. The booth, under the management of Mr A. B. Griffiths, of the Yorkshire Grey Hotel, aid an able staff of assistants, provided refreshment both liquid and solid to all and sundry, and everyone speaks in the highest terms of praise of the courtesy and attention shown them. Mr Piercy's fruit stall was well stocked and those who wished for light refreshment were well served here. The officers of the club acquitted themselves to the satisfaction of all, and the decisions of the Judge, Mr Seddon, evidently were absolutely correct as there was not the slightest question about them. Mr Darley, the Secretary had a trying time of it all day, but managed to see everything through. Jc* # 44.—Mr Keece*s Bandy, OUT.T . . 1 33,— Mr Warrington's Lottie, 9,0 .. 2 [48.-^Mr Crosby's Deceiver, 10.12. . 0 The horses were got away fairly well together, but Pandy took the lead which he kept to the finish, jumping, every hurdle, Lottie kept pretty close, but she had no show irom the start. fell at the third hurdle, and his rider, Mr James Bird, received a. nasty spill, and dislocated his shoulder. Mr Fraser pulled the joint into place, and Mr Bird was soon about again. This was the only accident . during the day. Dividend,; 255; 125 investors. 2.— -District Hack Hurdle Race of 4115, with a sweep of 10s to go to the second horse, over six flights of hurdbs, 3ft 6tn. Distance, 1\ miles. For all horas the bona jute property of residents in the Tauraaga County for three irionths before day of race. In negotiating the third jump Rifleman threw his rider, Mr G. Vercoe, \rho was not injured, and the horse galloped away over the paddock, taking -two fences in his course. Major ran off at the first jump as also did two other horses. After once getting the lead, Tarawera held it to the finish. Dividend, £1 7s ; 126 investors. 3. -Madden Pi^tb of £10. Distance, l£ miles. Weight for age. 39.— Mr Addis's Laddie, 4 years. . 1 13.— Mr Parkinson's Grasp, 5 years 2 18.— Mr Vercoe's Rangitira,*5 years C 33.— Mr Edward's Ruby, 0 years 0 I.— Mr Te Mete's Wooilem .. 0 7.— Mr Grant's Catch Me .. 0 Tarawera and St. John were also entered but did not run. Rangitira led for about a mile, but had to give way to Laddie, who seemed to have a lot in hand for when once the reins were shaken put he went r away and | won easily. A good start was effected, but Minnie had the best of it, and led for a long distance, but Tiger came up when about half a mile from home, and held on to the last, making a spledid finish. JTiger and his jockey received three cheers after the weighing. Dividend^ £6 15s ; 226 investors. 5.-— Maobi lUob of £5 . Horses to be owned and ridden by Maoris. Distance, 1 mile. For horses owned by residents in the Tauranga District, to be in possession of owners for at least three months before the Sate of race. Weight, lOst 71b.
