WOMEN DOCTORS IN AMERICA.
Pecuniarily the woman dcotor in America is a success. The Dptedical profession is remunerative beyond any other, and is the only one where eqtial rates prevail for men and wpmenv Statistics snow that the proportion; of women who fail and give up their Eractice, being unable to gain a velihood, is smaller than that of men. But it must be remembered that it is only the exceptional women who take up the study, while men go into it, as they go into law or trade, >rom the necessity of self-support rather than from ability or regard for the work. Of 420 women graduates of one college, 390 are engaged in active practice. Eleven never practised, twelve gave up their profession on account of marriage, and seven from poor health. Their average age is twenty-seven years. And in ano^ner enumeration of seventy-six women the average income was JB^OO, Ibut |ouir;di them earned from £3000 to £5000 a year, while thirty- two per cent re-r ported one or more persons entirely dependent upon then*.,
