Female suffrage agitation. Auckland, Tuesday.— -A meeting under the auspice 3of the Women's Franchise League was|held last night in the Opera House. Mrs Captain Daldy occupied the the chair, and the ball was crowded in every pait. A number of resolutions were i carried to the effect that the meeting considered women were now entitled to the franchise, not as a privilege; but as a right, and requesting the Legislature to pass au act granting the Bame without delay. Each resolution was proposed and seconded by ladies, who read or recited their little speeches with marvellous sangfroid, utterly oblivious of the cries of 'Hear, Hear* and the applause of au attentive and delighted audience.
It was contended that woman should have a vote as she is of very renote origin, having come out o"f Adam's ri^s and come' down to us through tlie ages hand in hand with man, and notwithstanding all this, she is placed on a level with criminals and lunatics, in being deprived oE a voice in the making of those laws which she has nevertheless to obey. One Speaker had failed to see any difference between a woman and a nj*o e*cej>fcu» th* «©x, while ail
agreed that wom&a was not merely a luxury ;but a neces.ity and without her \ the. tinbnrn millions would remaiu and politicians ai well as ot-her men would soon die O nt. It was emphatically urged ti'iat all the objections to the .extension of the Franchise to women were - based merely on sentiment and uoi; on reasoi?. * | Each resolution was carried, almost unanimously, and woman, with all her faults, fu rnisUed to t&e s Sfeckland pubha last night, one one of t\$ moM; amusiug and entertaining fo&&mkamm it has enjoyed For a long time past.
