Mr J. A. Tole will most likelj succeed to the position but the names of Button and Mackechnie are also mentioned. SirW. Fox's health. Aucklahd, Wednesday.— Sir Wm. Fox still remains in an exhausted and prostrate condition, aud his state is such as to cause the anxiety of his friends. An iuhuman parent. Auckland, Wednesday.-- A man named Albert Stephen Banbary, gum digger, was yesterdey sentenced to three month's hard labour for leaving bis threw young children without means of support. The children were left by the defendant in a oneroomed whare at Birkenhead for nearly a week, and were reduced to such destitution that they were found eating pine tree tips to satisfy their craving for food. Auckland, Wednesday. — Testerday forenoon the Government steamer Hinemoa left Manukau, via North Cape, on a cruise along the East Coast in the vicinity of the Bay of Plenty in search of the missing schooner Louie, now over 30 days out from Lyttleton to Auckland. Various rumours were in circulation yesterday iv town regarding the Louie, hut proved in each case without foundation. Beresford Street School. Auckland, Wednesday. — The city schools committee have passed a resolution protesting against the action of a bare majority of the Board of Education terminating Mr Harrison's engagement as head master of the Befeaford Street School, Mr Dale's ftiuernl. Wellington, Tuesday. — Lord GHapgow has conceded the right of private entree to the Mayor of Wellington. Lord Onslow's withdrawal of this privilege caused some soreness. The charges against Whyte. Wellington, Tuesday. — The case in which Whyte and Baggot are charged with conspiracy to defraud the Lands Revenue, was resumed today, and concluded this afternoon. The Eesident Magistrate reserved his decision till to-morrow morning.
