Daring the last ten days, aays the. *Kiispr of April 7, crowds of people may be seen daily making their way on foot from Baku to Beachany, where a monster petroleum jet raises an immense colnmn in the air, and has been sponting with undiminißhed rigor for the last fourteen days. The jet throws but daily 300.006 poods, or about 6000 tons^ and forms a stream sufficiently strong to drive a good sized flour mill. Hundreds of workmen are busily engaged endeavoring to confine the stream to the condnctor leading to the reservoir. This task is difficult, as the volume of the stream continually threatens to break through the dams. This immense spring is the property of the Caspian Company. The effect of the voluminous spout has been to reduce the prioe of petroleum on the spot from b\ to 3| copoeka per pood, and if the spout continued as it promises to do, over a months the price will probably fall to 2 copecks. Wheathe boring of this spring had reached the oil bed, the first spout came with terrific violence, and for the first few hours it ca|t up so muob. sand and stone that the surfacf round about has been raised by atlea*t Sfoot. Alter this the jet consisted of pare naptha. It rushes forth with so much yioleoae, Jihatthe vibrations of the jroond^nd^bout ffcllks the rumble of an earthquakei <j \| f ! H
