KUAOTUNU.

OWS COERESPOITDEBT. / It is aorne time since I last wrWto you concerning this district and there La^e Jbeen a great many changes in the jroldfield generally. Mr Lanigan, who ab< nt two months ago applied for permission ] to construct a tramway, came down here,! made a great fuss, started the surveyors io work with instructions to complete the eurWoy and plans in great haste, got an agreement signed by holders of sites along the pk>posed route biuding them to let the tram wa£ pass through their holdings without claiming compensation, but alas ! now that ihe^survey is completed, etc. , where is Lanigau '-i The surveyors have written repeatedly to him in vain no reply can be got from him. The Manposi G.M. Company, is erecting a battery of 5 Btaraps for their o#n use. The Red Mercury Company has purchased the battery lately owned by the Kuaotunu Quartz Crushing Company and propose erecting a tramway of about fof a mile in length to connect their mine with it. The Kapai has given up working for the present and is under protection, aud the Carbine has done likewise. Tbe John Bull is, I believe, also going in for protection. The Great Mercury has been doing very well lately, Mr Hornibrook, late manager rust got good gold before he resigned. Mr Pettigrew, the expert sent over from Sydney, to take charge is in a fix, he having no certificate. The Try Fluke is atill doing well and i§ likely to do well for years. The Irene is being worked by tributers who are doing pretty well. The luviota was forfeited but taken up again, and is expected to prove payable. The Just in Time, on tribute, ia doing grandly, last crushing they netted £30 a man for about 5 weeks work, the hands all sport horses now. The Pride of the Hills ha* started to work on tribute but has not had a crushing yet. The Kuaotunu Company were fined £o and costs, at last Warden's Court, for not working their ground. Mr Curtis, proprietor of the Excelsior battery, has taken up the old Wairoa partly on Native Land and partly on Mr. Comers property, as it adjoins the battery he expects to be able to make it pay. Down about the township there are 5 claims working,— The Lucky Hit; lately sold under ' Warrant of distress, ' an i bought by a local syndicate who have just chrushed 7 tons for 7 oz? ; The Black Jack, worked by Rowe and party, not making a very good show ; The Victoria, lately taken up by Thomson and party who are busy getting out a crushing, and the Long Drive, just taken up again. Our sohool masters have one after auothei been taken sick and left, also two relieVtug teachers. The Education Board's btafl! of relieving officers bang exhausted the school has been closed till the new school is erected. The teachtra residence is all but flashed, and a school house for 8i) children will be started in a week.

Mr H, A. Gordon, inspecting engineer to ] the Mines Department, paid us a visit last week and was duly interviewed and deputationised. The weather has broken in earnest and rain, wind, thnnder and lightning are the order of the days, consequently our roads are in a sad state. I met Mr Adam Home here the other day, he is now travelling for Stone Brothers of Auckland, and looks aa if the life agreed with I him.
