EXTEAORDINARY LEAP BY A HORSE.
On Fiiday, the 3rd inst a remarkable jump was performed by a dray horse, the property of Messrs Dobson and Sons, brewers, of Nelson, The horse had been harnessed to a spring cart that was about to be sent out with bottled beer, but the animal was evidently eager for a scamper, for before he could be checked he st trted off at a gallop, from the brewery in Tasraan street, in the direction of the Normanby Bridge. A very slight deviation from a straight line took the horse on to the bridge, though a pretty sharp turn was needed to cross the structure safely. Arriving on the Iri lge, how..vjr, the horse evidently found it impossible to turn at the rate it wasjjoin/, and therefore, in order to avoid ooming in contact with the bridge railing he attempted to jump it. The horse itself appeared to claar tbe rail, but the cart coming behind it struck and carried away the woodwork, and the horse and cart fell into the shallow river som? 10ft or 18ft balow. Such w«t. the impetus gained from the pacj the ho m was going that the animal alighted some twenty feet further down stream than the bridga, and fortunately its fall was broken by a stout branch from a a -willow tree, against which it struck, and from which it fell into the river just below some big boulders* The horse sustained little apparent damage, and the cart simply had the shafts broken.
