A CANNY SCOT.
He wanted some wethers, and (says "Aulus" in the Austrlasian) he travelled down to Invercargill to inspect some lor sale on a station in that neighborhood. He saw them, liked them, and made an offer ; but the price was to high ; the owner and he haggled for some time, but finally he left without buying. He got oft the track, acd after wandering about for some time found himself stuck in a swamp. His repeated coo-ees finally brought assistance in the shape of the Owner of the wethers. " Hoot, mon, wnat's brought ye back here at a' ? " asked the latter in a quiet leisurely fashion. " I was thin kin' o' the matter, and I just come back to say that I'll tok' the sheep at your am price. " He was at or.cc pulled out, dried and refreshed. A good night's rest made him a new man again. In the morning his host suggested a tale-note. •'1 cuuldua conscientiously gie the price ye're askin. ' " was the reply. " But ye promised last night. f> •'But I'm no in the swamp uoo, ye ken. " And this time he got away safely.
