v AIJdKLAND RACING. Auckland, March 31.— The autumn meeting of the Racing Club opened yesterday. The Governor and Lady Onslow, Admiral and Lady Scott and party were present. The following are the results of j'the principal events :— -Tradesman's Plate, won by Frcscole ; Northern Champagne Stakes, Liralleurie ; Onslow Stakes, Brigand ;. Stewards' Handicap, Cissy ; Ellersli(? Handicap, Namoa ; Autumn Handicap, Impulse. OJF WM;f VEH?Q& Auckland, April! .—Wm.Veitch, of Wairoa South, died yesterday afternoon. PASTOR BIHCH. Pastor Birch returned to Auckland by the Mararoa from Sydnej yesterday. DROWNING FATALITY. Thames, March 31.—This afternoon two sistera, named Isabella Viva Gillespie, and Theresa Peonie Gillespie, aged respectively 15 and 16 years, daughters of H. C, Gillespie, local manager for the Kauri Timber Company, lost their lives while bathing in the Kaneranga river at Paranyai. Another young lady, Miss Carpenter, had a narrow escape while attempting to save them. \ . FATAL ACCIDENT. Wellington;. March 31.— A young man, Otto Campton, while engaged excavating some ground at the new Lunatio Asylum at Pororua yesterday, was buried alive under a fall of earth. He was takea out and brought to the Hospital, where he died this afternoon.
