A MONUMENT TO COLUMBUS.

The Eiffel and Watkin. Towers are botll to be eclipsed by a oolloesal monument *0 Columbtw whicn ia to be erected in Chicago in 1892 during the exhibition of the World's Fair, as it will then be the : 400 th anniversary of the discovery of . America. The height of the strnotart will probably be about 1400 ft Tht pedestal is of graceful proportions, 800 ft nigh, but the unwieldy appearance of tin globe, of which the diameter will be equal to the height of the Eiftel Tower, will take away considerably from its merits. On the summit of the whole will be built an observatory, while at the base under the globe the space will be occupied by a Columbus museum and a library devoted to literature connected with his other discoveries. The surface of the globe will be marked in the usual manner ; while at thr Equator a gallery will run round it, which wul be about two-thirds of a mile in circumference. In addition to this, then will be an inclined railway nearly four . miles long, winding round the outtnae from the Equator to the North Pole. The whoaf structure is designed by Alberto de Pallassio, who is a fellow-countryman of Columbus. The cost of construction will be about a million pounds sterling, whist an extra £160,000 will be required lor lifts and other micliinery.— Home Paper.
