AUTOMATIC CREAM RAISER.
An important and valuable invention for the rapid and effective production of cream is now. being exhibited by Mr James Petter, of Yeovil, who is the sole manufacturer of the implements. The inventor is Mr W. H] Wells, of that place, The apparatus* is called "The •Speedwell' Patent Automatic Rapid Cream Raiser," and it seems calculated to introduce some valuable improvements in bhe production of cream, the method being effective and speedy. The following is a description of the invention ; — The new apparatus consists of a cellular tin vessel, the principal part of which forms a semi-circular dish. For producing cream the raiser is, when filled with new milk, placed into a rectangular bath of cold spring water. In
|rom two to four hours the whole of the cream is thus raised to the surface within the upper semi-circular idiab, and may be instantly removed by a sweep of a semi-circular skimmer made for the purpose. As the whole process may be bo rapidly completed, the the same set of raisers can be used for j each successive milking. The cream being so quickly removed is perfectly fresh and sweet, as is also the skim I milk, which may be advantageously used for cheese making, pig or calf feeding, or for domtstic purposes. It requires only water, such as may be obtained from any spring or well. The cream is easy to churn, and, being raised before any chemical change has taken place in the miffc, the butter made from it is consequently perfect j in quality, and retains its freshness in j an extraordinary manner. The cream from the " Speedwell Raiser" whips well, and, if desired, may be trans* formed into Devonshire clotted cream' by the ordinary process of scalding. The raiser produces as" much cream in two to four hours as cant be obtained in twenty-foUjT hours by ordinary setting. Being so short a time in use, neither the cream nor tie skim milk adheres to the raiser, and it can, therefore,*be easily cleansed -by rinsing with scalding hot water. The invention is -patonteqV in the principal countries of Europe, and in America and New Zealand j and will, as we have said, be made solely by Mr J. B. Potter,.?* 1 Yeovil.* It marks toe introduction of an entirely new system. It is automatic and requires no motive power. It has also the advantage of being sold at a reasonable price, and it will, no doubt, pfbve a* great boon to farmers and others interested in dairy occupations.
