Haggen On Wednesday, §t. Andrew's Day, the annual regatta (was held. This is the great event of the year in Taurfinga, and is always jlooked forward to with much^iuterest( Formerly it has been lield in tiio nUtumn, but the weather having provejd too uncertaiu it was decided to hold it in future towards the close off the year, and St Andrew's Day wag the date fixed on for the occasion. (JDhe weather was on fche whole very favorable, the day breaking out beautifully fine. There was a very large gathering of settlers and natives, and over a thousand people were present during a portion of the day. The harbour looked gay with boats and bunting; Captain Amodeo and the officers and men of the lona were scrupulously attentive to the comfort of their visitors to the flagship and their kindness was much appreciated. The gallant captaiu is deservedly popular ashore dr. afloat, and if the Committee can again secure hie services they will not f a^il to do so. Mr Woodhouse, who /is a . great favorite with passengeri/had a splendid luncheon prepared in the saloon of "the lona, which reflected the highest credit; on hiss resources. The table was prettily set ox\k with no end of variety of palatable dishes, arranged with skill and tas^e, and the matter for regret was the/c were not more to avail themselves of it. The arrangements of the Committee were very complete, and their Secretary Mr Hulme, and Messrs Commons, Webster, Alexander, Sncrdgrasß, and Ward, worked very hard toxhave the day's programme well carriea\fcbrougb. Captain Williams gave greit satisfaction as starter. There was only one entry for the open sailing bbaJT Race of Mffc and under— the Tu^b/ Mr. orfty, so this event did cpme^off. The first event was the Sculling Race, started about 10 o'clock, put there was sojiej delay with the sailing races, aud a gTeat deal of time was wasted in get- i ting off the Open Sailing Keel or centre-board Boatkltace. When it was got eff the start w^s not good and the Committee should strictly disqualify boats not in position in time to Bare such delay in future. The war canoe race was very exciting and those who took part in this under Mr Webster deserve all credit for making this one of the features of the programme. The skiff races did not come off, as although there were other entries only Mr Robinson for the- 16ft. race, and Mr White for the 20ft. race, went to start, 'yhe following is the result of the other events : — ' 2 Scuwng Race, for skiffs 16 feet and under j to he rowed upon a bonafide gunwale, Allcomers. A splendid start was effected, arid the Witch led off keeping her position round the Stella channel buoy, and back past the flagship with the Trident second, and T» Tau holding third place. The other boats were well together, tome distance behind. | After the first three passed the flagship the wind calmed down, and although the first three boats continued to make a little headway the Coy, Komihana, and Hiria, were carried back by the tide, till the breeze again freshened. On the three leading boats coming down the Harbour on the first round the Te Tau took tfco lead and kept it till round
by tha Matapihi buoy on the second round when the Him camo in and took the lend, the T© Tau and Witch running for second place. All of a sudden tfc# Komihana came up and led for a time amid great excitement but loiing the wind she fell off, the .Hiria coming in lit, Koaihana 2nd jTe Tau 3rd, and the Witch 4tb. The Myrtle lod through the first round closely followed by the Coy, the Trideut being third somedistonce behind, followed well by the Dart. In the second round up harbour the Coy got the lead, and led to the finish with the Myrtle close up most of the way. Near the finish the Myrtle threatened to past the Coy, and they came up almost even to ttit winning line when a gust of wiud shot the Coy ahead, and she won by about half a length amid much excitement on shore. The Dart got third place against the Trident which was disqualified. A protest has been lodged by Mr Moss against the Coy being declared winner on the ground that shehad jfive men instead of four, and that sho fouled the Myrtle at the Stella buoy. Myrtle is the boat built by the late Mr Oaine'i and the Coy was built by Mr Calloway. The Dart is the workmanship of Master Blake an apprentice of Mr Brain and was built during his spare hours: She reflects the highest credit on his perseverauce. 8 Gbeasy Pole. We cannot speak too highly of the way in which Mr Hulme discharged his onerous duties to the sttiaf action of all. During the day the Artillery Band, under the leadership of Mr Hunter, played a number of selections. This efficient body of musicians rendered much to the day's enjoyment, and evidently enjoyed their visit. On the whole the Regatta was a great success.
