THE ELECTION.
TO THE EDITOR. Sic, — It seems to be the general impression that in the coming 1 election the votes will be pretty equally divided between Messrs Sheehau and Kelly, and most of the voters here promised to support either. one candidate or the other. The final decision will therefore rest with the few that have not committed themselves to either side. It would be a great thing to secure these votes ■for Mr Sheehan whoso cause you have so ably advocated. We will not dwell on Mr Kelly's claim who is simply a local man whose interests are bound up in this district and who some years ago did something for the place. Mr Shenhan on the contrary is quite free from local interests or prejudices, he comes before us aa a statesman with far loftier views than the mere advancement of this district. His endeavours will be to promote (his view of) the good of the country at large if not the whole Empire. Then let us think of his disinterestedness, £40,000 of his own money given away entirely for the benefit of his country and party — happy country ! fortunate party ! Mr Sheehan tells us that the Government, made up as it is of three different parties, holding totally opposing views on most subjects, is only provisional. He might have described it as Stout but not well -B&llanced, top-heavy .and shaky about the legs. It may go on for some little time with doubtful and uncertain steps but as soon as it meets "any obstacle, such as a question upon which thero is much difference, down it will come dragging its supporters with it. How self -sacrificing to be ready to take office with such a Government as Mr Sheehan says he is. Can we help admiring suoh devotion; I might go on enumerating his virtues and qualifications, but has not enough been said to convince all wavoring elector* and induce them to rush to the poll on behalf of Mr J. Sheehan.— l am, &c, A Hyjißua Admirer.
