WE DON'T WANT TO FIGHT, BUT—
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — Mr Chadwick's latest scheme ia an attempt to force his wharf down the throats of the ratepayers against their will at his own price. The Borough Council have offered to meet Mr Chadwick on a fair platform to settle a fair price, but that does not suit our grabbing friend, he must have his own price (even Shylock only wanted his pound of ilesh) and to bring this about he does all the injury he can to the ratepayers to gain his object. The circumstances under which the wharf was constructed must not be lost sight of, it was put up simply to enhance the value property belonging to Messrs Chadwiek and Wrigley and keep trade at their end of the town. The speculation having failed, why should the general body of ratepayers suffer the loss and be saddled with Mr Chadwick's white elephant ?— 1 am &c, RXTBrATEB. Tauranga, 15 May 1885.
