MELBOURNE,

, Feb. 23.

Government has received a reply to the offer of troops for the Soudan. The Imperial Government expresses

high appreciation of the tenders of Victoria, South Australia, and Queensland, but are unable to accept them, as the troops could not arrive until too late. If operations in the Soudan are prolonged until autumn, offers will be considered. Messrs Prichard and Morgan, of Queensland, have promised £500 towards the Patriotic Fund, and will give the amount annually.
