During the engagement at El Metommeh the enemy were never nearerthe Britieh troops than thirty yards. Seven thousand rebels took part in the engagement, and lost thirteen hundred killod and wounded. The English loss was twenty killed and sixty wounded. The funeral of the Marchioness of Normanby will take place at Whitby on Saturday. • j Mr Chas. Bradlnugli's appeal against the decision of the Court of Queen's Bench refusing to grant him a new trial of the case in which he was fined £1,500 for having sat and voted in the House of Commons without having taken the oath prescribed by law, has been dismissed.

Prince Bismarck has accepted au amended form of the annexation rules proposed by England. The efforts at a compromise between Victoria and Mr Wilton, liquidator in the Oriental Bank estate, proved futile. When Sir Charles Wilson arrived within four miles of the Nile on the

19fch, the enemy stormed in force. Colonel Stewart succeeded in occupying Zarebah, although under heavy fire. Here Col. Stewart was wounded. The enemy lost heavily. The British loss is not stated. Cameron, special correspondent of the Standard, and Herbert, of the -Morning Post, were both killed. General Buller takes command of 'operations. The latest n<3ws from Gordon is "cTatecr Khartoum', December' l9, and reported all well.

Later reports from El Metemmeh show that the enemy numbered 7,000, and their loss is estimated at 2,000. The British loss is estimated at 21 killed, and &buut 100 wounded. Sir H. Stewart has been raised to the rank of Major-General. . General Earle telegraphs that it is doubtful whether any fighting will occur before his column reaches Berber. The uncles of Sulieman, by whose orders Colonel Stewart and party were murdered, have submitted to him.

Later telegrams report that the Arabs made an attack upon General Earle's column, but were repulsed by the oavalry. The latter subsequently attacked the rebels, and forced them to retreat.to Berbi.

CAPETOWN, Jan. 28

Telegrams from the Transvaal state that Colonel Warren, commanding the expeditionary force to Bechuanaland, had informed President Kruger that no white men will be allowed to remain in Goshen without permits from the British authorities.
