THE LATE F. W. ARMITAGE, M.D., M.R.C.S.E.

At an early hour on Tuesday morning, the intelligence of the death of the late Dr Armitage was received with unfeigned sorrow by all the residents in town and settlers throughout the district. Dr Armitage was one who was held in universal esteem, and had won the friendship of many by repeated acts of kindliness, which will now recur, with all vividness to their memories. The deceased gentleman came to this Colony in 1869, and has died at the early age of 41. On arrival here he joined the Constabulary Force, receiving his appoiutraont as Surgeon to the forces under Colonel (afterwards Sir George) Whitmore. At the hands of Sir Donald McLean, ho received the appointment of Health Officer for the Tauranga District, which appointment ho held, and continued to fulfil his duties, until prevented by tho malady which has terminated fatally. Dr Armitage served all through the period of the native troubles — when Te Kooti was to the fore — and endured great hardships during the Uriwera and East Coast campaign. As a local practitioner, he was welcomed as a friend as well as the medical attendant, and his loss is keenly felt. The late Dr Armitago was surgeon to the local Benefit Societies. He took a great interest in all intellectual matters, and was an active supporter of the Institute. In his decease Tauranga and district suffer a serious loss, and every one will echo our sentiments when we express tho deepest sympathy for those survivors of his family so suddenly bereft of his presence.
