"WHEN GREEK MEETS GREEK.
Duelling has happily long been out of date in civilised communities, and wordy wars whose weapons are sarcasm and invective, 1 have taken the place of the more dangerous meeting. " When Greek meets Greek" has become a proverb applicable to our own times, and has seldom been better illustrated than on Tuesday morning, when two of our chief townsmen met on the Strand to indulge in a quiet talk re the now noted " Strand North." It did not take long for hostiltiiea to commence. The •• Board" rushed at the *' County" like an enraged bull, but the hitter received him with the skilful ease of an accomplished picador. Again and again was the charge renewed ; each time, however, with like effect. The "County" appeared to be conscious of the truth and stability of his sideofthe argument, and the " Board" like Roderick Dhu felt that— v As firm rock or castle roof, Against the wintry shower is proof, His foe invulnerable still foiled His wild rage with steady skill." Of course it was only to be expected th.it i a crowd would gather round to watch the fun, and of course among those present was the notable Mrs Grundy, who was overheard , to remark, "that somebody had had some- ; thing ; somebody was getting something, and someone would have to give something. " This sagacious speech was greeted with approbation, the wisdom of it ' being self - evident. Two gentlemen of such high standin? could not disgrace themselves before the public, so a truce was called, and the combatants separated. Several slight skirmishes occurred during the day, but they were not of any serious moment. "Right makes might," and the "Board" thought that in his case discretion would prove the better part of valour. And so it did 1
