Last Might's Despatches
Gold Discovery at Coroman&el. 1 AUCKLAND. At the Supreme Court tha following sentences were passed : —William Cook, larceny of a watch, 12 months' Imprisonment; Ann Hogan and Mary Walsh, stealing a pnrse of money, six months each ; John Francis, forging a deed, two years; John Maher, stealing cheques, three years. In the case against Smith, for shooting with intent, at Whangarei, the jury could not agree, and were discharged. The case is again proceeding. The Grand Jury found true bills against H. Johnson, for obtaining goods on false pretences ; Fredk. O'Brien, forging and William Curnow, rape; Patrick Lawlor, indecent assault; Arthur Vincent, [alias Wellesley (of Tauranga), larceny; Robert Little, (two charges) fraudulent bankruptcy } Henry Whitakor Dewal, forging . and uttering; Coombes, (two charges) embracery; R. Putman, forging and uttering. No bill was found in the ease against William Barnett, for opening a mail bag. A very rich gold reef has been discovered in Mataira creek, Coromandel, . owned by Macdonald Brothers. They hold a lease from Mr Molntosh.
