The P.M.S.S. Oity of Sydney, with the English, and American mails, arrived in Auckland on January lGfch. Sho left Sari Francisco on December 23rd, and experienced strong N.W. gales and a rough sea during the first fourteen hours, when

moderate weather and light winds set in * On Jan. lith, at 5.24 p.m. , when about 406 miles from Auckland, the after crank broke. ThewindwasN.E.jand the ship had to go on under sail until Jan. 14th. The crank having been mended as well aa could be done at sea, she steamed a-head five knots an hour at 1.30 p.m., reaching this port at 12.15 p.m. on the 16th. Up to the time of the accident the steamer never did -, better, having averaged 301 miles per 24 'hours for 17 consecutive days- This is an almost unparalleled run. Owing to the breakage of the crank it has been decided to detain her here till the necessary repairs have been effected. It is expected they will occupy 10 or 12 days, at the end of which time the vessel will continue her voyage. Arrangements were made with the Union Company by which the s.s.
