CAMBRIDGE AND OHINEMUTU ROAD.

[by ol'r itinerant reporter.]

Very little importance has been attached in Tauranga to the statements lately made to the effect' that a road is likely before long to be opened from Cambridge to Ohinemutu, but from information gathered on the spot it appears to be far from improbable that before very long a good road between those places' will be actually in existence. There are five different tracks from Ohinemutu to Cambridge. The road at present used by those who travel between the two places is 85 miles in length, and passes through open country the whole way, and is .known as tho Tewhefc.u track. A considerable portion of it, at the Cambridge end, is already availablo for drags. The next track 13 known as the Kakako, and is shorter, but has bush in it. Three tracks, known respectively as the Papanui, the Tahawapa, and tho Awaho, join at Tapapa, half way to . Cambridge, the distance by which is stated to be as little as 48 miles, and though a good deal of bush, to be tolerably level. It was by the, last mentioned route that Mr Moss travelled, and it is this track that is now about to be opened" up. A few days ago Mr Sheehan instructed Captain Simpson to report on it, and he is now on his way to Ohinemutu under the guidance of William Marsh, a Maori who is the owner of the land . for nearly half the distance, and permission has been obtained to make the road. Another portion of the road nearer to Cambridge belongs to the Hauhaus, and it is only with these that any difficulty is *to be encountered, but it is believed that no objection will be raised by them. Government have already handed to William Marsh the sum of £100, to be expended on the commencement of the road. In face of these facts it behoves the inhabitants of Tauranga, if they wish to obtain the Lake traffic, to be on the alert, and do all in their power to make the journey as facile and expeditious as possible. The Lake resj.dents are working their utmost to cut connection with Tauranga and to open the Cambridge route, and one has already stated that he will give £1,000 towards it.
