I Ths Annual Meeting of the Tauranga ' Jockey Club was inaugurated yesterday with Goinplete success. The sport; proved excellent, tne> weather fine but dusty, and .the attendance unprecedently large. At an early hour it was clear that a regular holiday would be kept. Everyone turned out' in festive attire, the majoI rity of the shops and places of business were closed, and horses and vehicles abounded. About eleven an exodus to the course took place, and by twelve there seemed hardly a. soul in the town. The majority either rode or drove, but some patronised the little steam launch i La Buona Ventura, the enterprising proI prietors of which piled regularly during the morning to Chadwick's Cutting. The scene on the course was pleasant and iively. Everybody appeared in the j highest spirits, and friendly were the order of the day. Strangers expressed themselves considerably astonished at the excellent quality of the racing, and the efforts of the handicappers received j the highest commendation. The Jockey Club Handicap ,wa3 of course the principal ; event, of .the day ; but the Hurdle Race | and Maiden Plate wore also capital contests. : Mr Brabant's awards gave entiro satisfaction, as also did the starting of Messrs ; Turner and Fraser. This was a splendid race, and created great excitement. It proved, however, a gift to Pungawerewere, Lalla Rookh being her most formidable opponent. With tho exception of Vengeance none of tho others were in it, and tho mar« won ea3ily by two lengths. HACK RACE, of Ssovs., with half entrance monoy added ; entrance 20s. : catch weights. Elsa, aged, 9st (Haydya) 0 Betting : 3 to 1 on Perfume. Elsa pulled up immediately after the start, and the race was left to Perfume and Doubtful, between whom a splendid struggle ensued. Doubtful held a slight load throughout, and won at last by about two lengths, amidst terrific cheering.
