i Auckland, Thursday. ;The £.M.;S.S. City of Sydney, with the English ami- American mails, arriyedhere this morning. She left San Francisco on : December 23rd, and experienced strong- • N. W. gales and* a rough sea during the first fourteen; hours, when moderate weather and light winds set in. On Jan. 11th, 5. 24p.m., when about 460 miles from Auckland, the "after ©rank broke. The wind was 3Sf.E.,and the ship had to '■ go on|und©» sail until Jan): 14th. The crank having b?en mended as well as could be done at sea, »he a-head five :knots&n"howatl,3ap.m., reaching this port at 12. 15 p.m. on the 16th. Up to the tihio of the acoident tHo steamer never did better, having averaged 801 miles per 24 hours for 17 consecutive daya.
