INLAND CORRESPONDENCE. TO THB EDIIOB; Sin, — The paragraph in your issue of the sth instant re survey opposition at Taupo contains a very garbled and unfair statement of the case. I cannot take any credit whatever for my share in these matters, which really were not affected by anything I did after arriving in Taupo, Mr Davis having already decided on withdrawing, and had withdrawn the surveyors from Opepe, where the first misunderstanding arose with the natives, and the party were then quietly at work on the survey of the Taupo township. After my arrival, the opposition of. the Taupo natives to the trigonometrical surveys manifested itself in all directions, and neither Mr Davis -nor myself nor any officer in i the district has succeeded yet, in. bringing the natives to reason.on. that point whiohibeara vitally on, the question) off surveys generally. Lastly, I, decline -altogether to take the position given.me in; the paragraphs alluded to, viz., of. rivalling Mr Davis by either tact or energy in, the management, of,' native questions.. Mr Davis's well-known ability and longexperience in-.dealing with every phase of Maori difficulty, , simply renders absurd, any suoh invidious paragraphs as this one of your inland correspondent.. Tauranga, I December 14 j 1877---[We have- great pleasure- in^ endorsing' Captain Tovey's remarks relative to the* weight of the six ledums shown, to us, which ; weigh exactly as he states, thus demonstrat- • ing the wonderful effects of the Tauranga climate in bringing fruit to perfection. jNot * only are the lemons referred, to the largestwe- remember having seen, but the flavor of the- fruit appears to improve withdts growthas is instanced in the present case. — En.].
