Bacon and Ham
A DEAR RASHES, Recently it was announced that, following on a conference between the Prime Minister and representatives of farmers, bacon curers, and retailers of baoon, the Government had decided to revoke the [Order in Council fixing the maximum prices for r baoon and hams. It was pointed out that the whole of the bacon oared in New Zealand would be available for Dominion consumption, as its export is prohibited, and that supplies would be augmented by reason, of the duty on baoon and hams imported from Australia having been remitted. Whether or not the supplies have been augmented, tho price of the rasher has undoubtedly risen quickly. A week or eo ago the best quality rashers cost the consumer Is 7d per lb' Now the retail price for the best quality rashers is 2d per lb. A reporter was informed by a city grocer that the retail price|of shoulder pieoe bacon is now Is 4d to Is 6i per lb. The retail price of ordinary ham is Is 9d per lb, and cooked ;ham oosts the consumer 8s per lb. The grocer said that the increases represented, generally speaking, an all* round rise of 4d or 5d per lb on ordinary ham.
