SECRET OF NEW BRITISH ENGINE.
. v ,STEAM .AND PETROL COM- •' ; .:'V ; BINED. ; , ' " aecrdt 'of engineering which lias caused a sensation in the technical world was disclosed to a . gathering i of scientists and engineers at the, Society of Arts. It wa!S,the new.''Still" internal com- » bustion engine, the result of eight years' research, by Mr William Joseph Still, and consists of a double force engine—using petrol and steam—which revolutionises the commercial' utility of * the internal combustion engine. By raising steam from the heat at jj resent lost in the-water jacket and exhaust, and then' expanding it in tlb engine at the .back of the main stroke.., for 1 the steam and one stroke for combustion pressure—enormo,us economy is effected.
< An expert who has investigated the capabilities of the »engine states that it shows nearly a 10 per cent, increased efficiency on the Diesel engine, now considered to be the most favourable of all the , internal combustion types. More than 50 per cent, fuel-energy is recovered. i( The claims made for the new engine are that it is capable of using any liquid or gaseous fuel; recovers the heat, which passes through the combustion cylinder; increases engine power and reduces fuel consumption; sixtimes as good as the present rail locomotives; by "self-starting" the efficiency is raised from 30 to 42 per cent.
