A regretta'ble occurrence' tool? place near Otakia 011 Wednesday afternoon, as the result- of which a young .man named 'Alfred Lobb, about 20 years of ago, lost his life 'by* ■drowning. It-ap-pears that he left his home 011 horseback to go to. the place 'where he ivas working on the other side, of, the rail; way. When lie had gone a short- distance along the station road flic- horse shied and ran backwards over the side, of the road into about J2ft of water. The young-man was thrown 'off, aud he was seen iby 'some; Ijoys on a hill to hold oil' to the- reins for 'some moments. The horse then seemed to fall iback 011 him, ami he disappeared'! 'A strong current of flood water was flowing at this point, and it is considered that the foody would) j bo carried away until it 'becomes entangled in a. fence or so me other obstruction. Constable; Southgate and a party secured a boat -anti- went in search of the'body, but they had not ■recovered it at a late 'hour 011 Wednesday night. 'The deceased was a son of Mr Alfred Lobb, and was a member of a well-known Otakia family. Much, sympathy will il)0 fd't with his >reliij fives. The liorse was caught and taken 'back to the. township.
