Tobin, who is an old Owaka boy. These two gentlemen' have taken up a sawmilling business 1 in the Catlins district. At tho meeting of the Bruce Coimty Council on Tuesday the tender ofi David Cook of £4 Ss 6di per chain for formation and metalling the Riverside Road, Balclutha., was accepted. The sum available will complete a lengthy stretch of urgently required metalling. Mr G. A. Coxoh has disposed of his plumbing business in Balclutha,. and purposes leaving, at the beginning of the. 'week for Hastings, where he intends to settle. The business is being taken over by Mr F. E. Smith, who, prior to the war, was agent in this district for the Wizard Lighting Company. •Mr Smith enlisted with the 16th. reinfore em eats, and has seen- three years.' active service., returning to the Doaninioir some weeks ago. The condition c-f the Balclutha traffic bridge was discussed briefly at Tuesday's meeting of the Bruce County •Council. Councillor Russell wild that he had seen it stated that one of the cylinders in the bridge was loose. If this was the case- the bridge was in a 'dangerous position, and he moved, "That the council make full inquiries •on the .matter from- the Clutha County Council." Councillor Begg, in l seconding the motion, wished to suggest that the openings from the traffic bridge to the sideway be closed up, as they were exceedingly .dangerous through people coming out in front of motors, etc. The suggestion was agreed to. It takes a lot to stop devotees of raeing%from "getting there" if they want to. Several carloads of southern sportsmen have passed through Balclutha during the past few days, for Christ church" to attend the. National meeting. 'The majority took the precaution to secure high-powered cars, an absolute essential in the present state of the roadis if a degree of comfort is to be obtained, but one Western District party of five started! off on the long journey in a Ford car that lias seen a good bit of service. Excellent proposition as the Fordl is for ordinary service, to ask it to negotiate SOO .miles with 60 or 70 stone aboard in the present state of the roads is/ 'looking for trouble."
