U-BOAT PILLAR.
One of Berlin's popular attractions is a "U-boat pillar'.' in the Museum of Oceanography, It is a four-sided column, on one side of which there is a graphic representation, nation' by nation, of the world's mercantile marines in July, 1914. On another side is a tabulation, month by month from January, 1917, to date, of the amount of tonnage, enemy and neutral, which German submarines have destroyed. On a third side is a set of figures purporting to show what percentage of allied shipping must be reckoned\as definitely lost and which cannot be made good by new construction. On the fourth side there is a comparison bf the tonnage of: the Allies, the Germanic Powers, and of neutral' States. 'As a graphic illustration, to visitors ;of what the destruction of "1000 registered tons" means, three miniature goods trains, of 50 waggons each,' each piled high with make-believe freight—or ;'4jso waggon-loads altogether—stand on toy tracks at the foot of the column.
