INDIANS' GENEROSITY.

Lavish generosity in giving to war funds lias been a marked feature of India's attitude ever since the Avar began, lroin the princely offerings of native rulers such as the Maharajah of Bikanir—who is at present giving, in addition to the many lakhs of rupees that he has already presented to the Government for various purposes, ;C20,000 a, month towards the purchase of aeroplanes—to the life-savings of a humble peasant. Wo are not told what occupation Atna .Rain, of Hoshirpur, follows, hut it cannot be a very dignified one, for his salary has ranged from seven to 10 rupees per month (9s 4d to 13s-Id. Out of this trivial wage he has, by what must have been extreme economy, saved 2000 rupees, and now in his old" age he has offered the whole of this sum for the benefit of his countrymen wounded in the war, asking i'c-,r no return but a letter of thanks and the priviligo of calling himself "Khairkhwah Sirkar" (loyal to the Government). His wish was gratified by an appreciative autograph letter from the Viceroy, granting his request.
