A CHOATE STORY.
At the Union League Club recently some old-time friends of the late .Joseph Hodges Choatc were reminiscing about the famous lawyer and recounting various stories of which he was the hero (states the 'New York Sun'). It "vas generally agreed that the following was the best: — Shortlv after Mr Choatc was .appointed Ambassador at the Court of St. James' he was a guest at a notable reception. Toward the close of the evening as he chanced to'be standing near the door an Englishman of the pompous, newly-rich variety and somewhat nearsighted, by the way, approached him and commanded majestically: "Call me carriage, me good fellow." "Good evening, Carriage," was Mr Choatc's reply. "Whv," said the Englishman, amazed and" shocked, "what do you call me carriage for?" "Well," said the Ambassador, "one could scarcely call you hansom."
