! LANCE-CORPORAL G. H. MEDER. I Lance-corporal George H. Meder, whose death in action in Franco is reported in the latest casualty list, was born at Owaka, and is a brother of Mrs 11. P. Vezey (Balclutha), Mrs Horan (Owaka) and Mrs Pullar (Katea). After spending his early days in his native township, he left for the North Island and took-up engineering work. He was engaged in this sphere of labour until his enlistment about two years 'ago with, the first Tunnelling Corps of Engineers. He left New Zealand on December 13, 1915, with his brother David, bound for active service overseas. " At the time of his death he was in his 29th year. Mrs Janet Meder, the deceased soldier's mother, lives at Auckland, and his father was the late Adam Meder, of Owaka. CAPTAIN JOHN M. MORRISON. Private advice has been received by Mr. Archibald Morrison (fanner, Lakeside, Kaitaugata) that his eldest son, Captain John M. Morrison, had been killed in action. The late Captain Morrison left with the 9th reinforcement draft, and prior to enlisting was on thfl teaching staff of .the. Stirling school. He was recently promoted to captain on the field of action. PRIVATE WILLHAM BAIRD. The Minister for Defence (Sir James Allen) has forwarded a telegraphic message to Mrs Baird (Stirliug) stating that her fourth son, Private Wm. Baird, had been reported as killed in action. The deceased soldier left with the 7th draft (Lord Liverpool's Own). Rifleman David Waterfield' Gibbs (MissS...Gibbs,.Catlins River) has been slightly wounded. Sergeant Allan Nelson Silcock, son of Mrs W. J. Silcock, of Clinton, has been wounded, but has now rejoined his regiment. Private telegraphic advice has been received from the Minister for Defence to the effect that Private Hugh Wilson, Stirliug, has been wounded' in action. Private Wilson left New Zealand with the 21st reinforcements shortly after Christmas. His wife and two children •reside at Stirling. The latest casualty list contains the name of Lance-corporal Robert Frank Cross among the wounded. He is a sou of Mr William James Cross, of Kakapuaka, and prior to enlistment was engaged in carpentering work in this neighbourhood, together with his brothers.
