The repairs* to the Clydevale jmnt were finished last week, and the punt is- once more running regularly. Bali'lutha Bowling Club has challenged the cricketers, and a match between the two clubs will shortly even--9 tuate. The Moor takings at the Balchitha flower show last week amounted to £U) 18s f» t |, being £2 10s better than last year's.

The 4.25 slow train north from Bnlclntha on Friday evening was the first to run into the new station at Stirling. which is now completed except for paving the platform. The ladies of Greenfield are to hold •• bazaar in the Greenfield Hall on April .18, to be followed by a dance.—Correspondent. A noticeable point of the flower show last week was the success of Kaitaugata horticulturists. In addition to numerous prizes in different classes they took four out of the six championships. Mr J. G. Paterson, up-river mailman, has secured a new trap, built especially for the mail service. It will hold six passengers, and has ample room for parcels. The vehicle was built and painted at Mr Criehton's local factory, and Mr Paterson highly commends the manufacturer for the good job he made of it. ■ • * We have been asked by the judges of tho baking .section at last week's show to specially mention Miss Alice Youngson, a pupil of last year's technical classes. We are pleased to do so, and congratulate Miss Youngson on her achievement —three firsts and two seconds. The commission to hear evidence for and against the constituting of. part of Catlins riding a town district sat at Owaka on Friday from 2.30 till 8.45 p.m. It was evident that the question has aroused keen interest and some illfeeling. A report of the proceedings is given elsewhere in this issme. A long procession of vehicles and horsemen followed the remains of Mr Melville from his late home to Port Molyneux Cemetery on Sunday, there being 40 traps and 24 horsemen, and the large number of old residents present was a noticeable fact in the funeral. Mr McLean, Romahapa, conducted the services at the house and graveside.

In our oflicc window there is on'view a handsome silver cup, won by Mr J. Campbell, Houipapa, at the Owaka summer show for most poiuts gained by any exhibitor at the show. Mr Campbell won the coveted trophy in a keen contest, scoring in different classes, and largely with his splendid Ayrshire cattle which he had brought from Southlaud. On Saturday evening a meeting of tlio Society for the Health of Women and Children was held in the borough council chambers. Present: Mrs T). Stewart (in the chair), Mesdames Waymouth, Jas. Sheddan, R. R. Stewart, .1. U. Landels, Misses F. Murray and E. C. Gawn. The honorary secretary (Mrs D. T.' Fleming) had resigned owing to removal to Dunedin, and Miss E. C. Gawn was appointed in her place. It was reported that three more members had joined the society. The secretary was instructed to write to Mrs Edmond, Dunedin Secretary, and Dr King with regard to securing a Plunket nurse for Milton and Balchitha societies, acting in conjunction. The sixpenny books, '/What Baby Needs," are sold out, so further supplies are to be ordered.

PERSONAL. Mr W. A. Spiers, of the Balclutha branch of the National Sank, has been successful in passing the first section examination for his accountancy degree, F.1.A., N.Z. Dr Andrew Stenhousc, of Balclutha, returned home on Friday after a year's visit to Britain. The doctor, who is looking well, has had a busy time while in the Old Country studying certain branches of his profession. Mr Clarke, cadet at Balclutha post oflicc for eight months past, left on Saturday night for Palmerston South. Previous to his departure lie was presented by the staff with a pocket-book and a collar case. Mr Simpson, from Motueka, takes Mr Clarke's place on the local staff. On Friday night Mr Chas. MeLcod •was met by several footballers and other friends and presented with a case of Loewe pipes as a token of his services as secretary of the Clutha Footoall Club and South Otago Rugby Union. On Saturday the Free Press staff presented him with an Auto-strop safety razor. Mr MeLcod leaves for Stratford to-morrow. On Wednesday night an old identity of Port Molyncux passed away there in the person of Mr George Cunningham, aged 7.'!, who settled in the district in 1870. He served in the Indian Mutiny with General Whitelock, and possessed a medal for his active service in that campaign. His favourite pastime was draughts, and he once had the pleasure of defeating "Herd Laddie" on the 'board. His family is all grown up, and Mrs Cuiininghani survives him. For the past few years deceased had not enjoyed good , health, being a sufferer from asthma.

I /At the last meeting of the Clinton ./Town Board Mr D. A. McLachlan, who is about to pay a visit to the Home land, resigned his position as member of the board, Beeognisiiig, however, that Mr McLachlan has for many years been a most useful and able member, and that the loss of his services would be a serious one, the board refused to accept his resignation, and instead granted him six mouths' leave of absence. Mr McLachlan leaves New Zealand early in April for Sydney-, where he embarks on the liner " Boon, "thus going Home by the Bed Sea route.' He will be accompanied on the voyage.by Mr Win. Boat tie, of Edinburgh, who for many years was in business in Dunedin, and probably by Mr Johnston, one time Clutha county engineer.—Clinton correspondent.
