OBITUARY.

It is just about three monthß since it was our sad duty to report the death of one of the early settlers oi the .Waitapeka district, and now another has been called to her rest in the person oi Mrs Adam' Sutherland, who died at her late residence on the evening of Thursday, the 25th June, after a long and painlul illness. Mr a Sutherland, who was the youngest daughter of the late John Lamond, was born ,at Glenshee, l J ertlishire, Scotland, in the year 1840. She emigrated to New Zealand with her parents along with three brothers and one sister (two sisters and one brother having died at Home) in th* lirst voyage of the iiobt. Henderson in 1858. 1/or some time after her arrival she remained in JJunedin, eventually taking up her residence at Waitapeka along with her parents in 18G2. She was married by the late i)r Bannemian, 1). D., in 18ot>., 13y the death of h«r husband sopie three years later she was left with a family of two to mourn his loss. The Christian training which she had received in her early days was her comiortand stay during her long period of widowhood and late illness. She, was of a cheerful, though quiet and retiring, disposition, which endeared her to all who had the privilege of her acquaintance. Mrs Sutherland is survived by, her son John, who resided with her, and her daughter; Mrs JErskine, who resides in Wellington Province ; also her three brothers, Mr (Jhas. Lamond of Waitapeka, Mr J as. Lamond, Willowmeade, Puerua, and Mr John Lamond, Southland. The funeral took place on Monday, at which a large gathering assembled to show the esteem in which the late Mrs Sutherland was held, and their sympathy with the bereaved families. The service at the house was conducted by Be v. Mr Dalrymple, and by. the Bev. Mr Orr at the grave side. By the death of Mrs Sutherland there aro only now two remaining of the little band of early settlers who took up their residence in the front of the Warepa bushj namely, Mtb Bobt. •Sutherland, who resides with her daughter, Mrs Win. Boss, Warepa, and ;Mrs Somerville, of Waitapeka A Many throughout this district will learn with regret of the deatn, at u comparatively early age, of the wit; Mr Bobt. Houliston, of Kakapuaka. She was a member of the well-known and respected Moffat family t of Te Houka, and had only been married for about four years. She was never physically strong, but she was always oi a bright and happy disposition, maintained through a trying illness, and endeared herself to all with whom she came into contaot. For some years she was a valued member of the Balclutha Presbyterian Church choir, and on the occasion of her marriage the members of the choir entertained her, and gave her a "?ery nice present. The sympathy of many friends will go out to the bereaved husband and members of the family on both sides in their irreparable loss. The funeral takes place this afternoon, the members of the Dalton Lodge of Oddfellows being requested to attend in regalia^ Bobert Esson, who died at Inch Clutha on Tuesday, was a very old and well-known resident of the Island.
