After more than twenty years of restoration, the cupola of the famous baptistry of Florence has at Tast been freed from its encumbering scaffolding, with tlio result that once moro its component masses of mosaic have been mado visible to the public. The roof the Florentine Baptistry has been concealed for so long in the process of renovation that comparatively few porsons have been privileged to enjoy the really magnificent spectacle of the great cupola with its glittering mosaic in gold and colors illuminated by the noontide sunshine. These celebrated mosaics, which are the joint work of a Greek named Apollonios and of numerous Florentine artists of tho fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, consist principally of small scenes representing the Rewards of the Just and tho Punishment of the Unjust. 3' ' ... ■•«!»». thfeW '■ ■'i'-'J 1 -. : '
