OBITUARY.

MRS J. BOYLE, SOUTHBRIDGE; ABTAT 71. One more link in the chain that binds the pioneering days of Tokomairiro to the present has been snapped by the death of Mrs John Boyle, of Southbridge, whose demise occurred on Friday. Her death was not unexpected. Some years ago she became an invalid to a chronic complaint, and a few weeks back her illness took a serious turn, from which she never recovered, and on Friday morning she passed quietly away. The deceased lady was well-known by her long residence in the district, and highly respected for her many good qualities, particularly for her kindness and true Christianlike spirit which she showed to all with whom she came in contact. The late Mrs Boyle was a daughter of the late James Maley, of County Galway, Ireland. In the year 1863 she emigrated to New Zealand in the ship Seville, and after arriving at Dunedin she immediately took up her abode in Tokomaitiro. In 1865 she was married to Mr John Boyle, who at that time resided in Fairfax. A few years later Mr Boyle purchased the farm at Southbridge which he at present occupies, and there his wife spent half her lifetime, enduring all the hardships of the pioneering farmer's wife, enjoying its little pleasures, till in the last years of her strenuous life she settled down to her well-earned rest, a model wife and mother, loved and respected, as she is now deeply mourned by all. During most of her residence in the colony she had the comfort of having the other two members of her family near her, the late Mr P. Maley and Mrs P. Hanley, of Clarksville, being her brother and sister. There are two sons and three daughters left to console Mr Boyle in his bereavement—John and Patrick, Mrs T. Quill, Margaret (all of this district), and Bridget, who is a nun in the Dominican order. The funeral, which took place yesterday, was a large and representative one. The cortege wended its way from her late residence to St. Mary's Church, thence to the Fairfax Cemetery. The Rev. Father Ryan conducted the services at both places.'
