Tokomairiro Farmers' Club

The usual monthly mooang Of the Tokomairiro Fanners' Club was held on Thursday ' evening. Present: Messrs J, B. Nome (president, in the ■*■ chair), A. Campbell (secretary) J. and W. Grey, W. W. P. Hall, Jno. Parlane, Thos. Hitchon, J. W.Potrie, Wm. Mooro. T. H. Russell, E, Martm, P. Porter, J. S. "■ Fleming, J. Heads, T, Scott, Allison, C. N. Draper, J. France and M. Finch, Apologios for non-attendance were received from Messrs Jas. M'Leod, W. Far* quharson, and J. Tough. —Mr A. Nelson's Protest.— Mr A, Nelson wrote as follows:—With reference to my protest to the prize being awarded to Mr Stephen Caudle for Class 11, collection of apples (dessert), at the recent winter snow, my main objection was that the exhibit ought to have been disqualifid as not being in accordance witn tho schedule. Fully two*thirds of the apples were woil-Known cooking varieties aud only one-third dessert apples. The Oiub should in my opinion stoutly object to any attempt to impose on thorn with regard to any exhibit. The Club are also to blame in not appointing a judge who knew the difference between dessert and cooking apples. 1 understand that the exhibits in Classes IX and X were disqualified as not being according to schedule.

The secretary explained that the conv rriittee had received the protest, but declined to entertain it, as it would bt) a reflection on the judge. He had got a man who reckoned himsolf an expert who said there were cooking apples in Mr Nelson's exhibit. * Mr Moore said the lady who judged this class did so under pressure She was not an export. Ho was not there himself but had wired to bis son to take up his duties, which he bolieved had been done. The Secretary: That is so. The letter was received. —Accounts The following accounts wore passed for payment : J. F, Drake, cordials, 153; Bowie, careiaker, 30; C..Mills, labor, 21s; Simpson and Hart,,prize, 225; County Council, rent, £3 ; A. Campball, hire and cartage, £6 6a; Graham and Konnard, £l lss 6d; H. W. Bastings, luncheon, £1 lis 6d; Insurance, Woollen Oe's. exhibit, 12s 4d, JRe tho item Simpson and Hart, £1 2s, tho secretary explained that this was a prize put on the schedule as being given by Simpson and Hart, brewers, Lawrence It had been won, and the prize-winner had got the prize, but the firm refused to consider it a gift, and the society would have to pay it. —Lighting of Hall.— The President said that the Rink had been lighted with acetylene at a cost to the Olub of £1 by Marshall and Summers. However that firm oxpected to get so much from oach special exhibitor, and some had paid uudor protest. He thought that should not bo so, as special display exhibitors were given to understand that they would not be charged anything. Tho Secretary said Marshall and Sum-' mers had offered to put m eight jets for £l, aud he had accopced that ofLr. Mr Jones, he believed, had been charged ss, und paid it under protest. Mr Hall said it was clearly understood u.tu those who made special displuys would be charged nothing. The lights were a groat improvement, and the Olub should pay it. Mr Moore thought all tho lighting could not be done for £1 unless the firm were intending it for an advertisement of their gas installations. Ultimately it was agreed on the motion of Messrs Hitchon and Hall, tha f all lights be paid for, except whero the Unix iuvd entered into private arrangement» whu exhibitors. It was further resolved that tho secree tary interview Messrs Graham and Kennaid in regard to a reduction in the ;harge for the Hall on account of the extra lighting done by the Olub. GENERAL. Ic was agreed that all prize money be paid over. Ai3o that all special exhibitors be thanked for their displays as tho success of the show was mainly owing to them* Also that the judges be thanked, and ©specially tho judge of the field turnip competition (Mr D. Andrews) who had spent ihroe days in getting over the .different fields. It was left with Mr J. S. Fleming and Mr Ohas. Draper to convey personally the thanKs of tho Club to Mr Andrews ;and Miss Charters the latter of whom ,had judged for tho Club on several occasions. —The Late Show.— Mr Mooro asked if there was any idea as to how thoy stood over tho Winter ♦Show. .The secretary said tho statomont had not been made up, but he thought it would come out alirigbt. Mr Parlane mentioned that ho had heard a lady had guessed the exact weight of tho sheep, but on account o\ {half and quarter pounds not being given iher estimate had been set asido. IhoPresident said there were no half pounds on tho scales and those who weighed the sheep had given the official weight as 651bs. .It was agreed that the charge for the aso oi the Club's hurdles bo (3d each and all damages to be made good by the hirer. It.was mentioned that tho shutters had been left Off tho Club's office windows and several panes of glass had boon broken. It was also stated that the doors had been loft open and lads and youths had been going out and in r Will. The Secrotary explained that the hockey girls had omitted to lock the door on one occasion and that was probably tho time when the shuttors wore left off. . —Social.— A meeting of tho social committee was then held, and Mr John Heads' name was added to tho committee It wa£ also agreed that the tickets be 5s with a3s invite a friend and lady. After appointing a sub-couimitte to sec re catering, music, etc., the committee adjourned to meet on June 261 h.
