Waihola Athenæum.

The annual meeting o(\ the sub' scribers of the Waihola' Athenreum was held in the schoolhouse, on Wednesday evening. Mr Tomkinsons was voted to the chair, and the following report was read.—

The committee desires to submit:to subscribers the annual , report rand balance sheet.,, The retiring committee are: Misses Paterson, Hilgendorf, and Miss Wisnesky, and Messrs James Williamson, William Andrewsjßrown, Tomkinson, Fred Andrews, John Williamson, Bell, and W. A. Paterson, The committee's officers for the year, were":—President, Mr William Andrews ; vice presidents: Messrs Tomkinson and Bell; Librarians: Miss Paterson and Miss Hilgendorf; secretary, W. A. Paterson; auditor, Mr Tomkinson.

The balance sheet has Seen duly audited by Mr Tomkinson, and a certified copy has been forwarded to the Secretary of Education, Wellington. The committee raised the visitors' subscription to 25, as the former charge was considered too low.

A concert com&iittee consisting of Misses Paterson, Hilgendorf, and Wis nesky was appointed, and a sum of £2 12s was raised to augment the athenpeum funds. The number of works added to the library during the year was 54. Seven magazines have been ordered for the present year, several are somewhat expensive, but the committee hope tha< the subscribers will appreciate the change.

On the recommendation of the librarians the committee decided to make up the magazines for each year in bundles, and lend out these parcels to subscribers.

The meetings of the committee have been well attended, and the interest in the'athenaeum has as usual been maintained. Owiwg to a variety of circumstances our income was not quite so large as Inst ytar, but our balance on hand, you will perceive, is over {6 grater t an 1 ist year. Your committee are hop;ful that a hall and Atherseum will be erected before long, although thj difficult es to be surmounted are considerable. The amount already raised is greater than could have been anticipated, and a little perseverance and united effort is sure to succ:< d.

Special irrnks are due '0 the 1 brarians for their ungrudging and constant services to the athenaeum and the district. Thanks are also due to the concert committee for managing the concert... and the work entailed in connection with it.

The money raised in the district will entitle you to a subsidy from the Government, although manifestly not so great as last year. The income for the year was 3s iod, the expenditure £l4 8s sd, and the balance inhand £l4 8s sd. The report and balance sheet were adopted, and the following committee was elected to serve for the ensuing year:—Misses Paterson, Hilgendorf, and Wisnesky, and Messrs James Williamson, William Andrews, Brown, Totnkinson, John Williamson, Albert Andrews, Finlayson, and W. A. Paterson.

The newly appointed committee met in the schoolhouse last Wednesday evening at the close of the annual meeting'of subscribers. The following office bearers were elected for the ensuing twelve months : President, Mr/ Tomkinson; vice president, James Williamson, and William Andrews; librarians; Misses Paterson, and Hil gendorf; auditor, Mr Findlayson, and Air W. A. Paterson secretary and treasurer.

Several small accounts were passed for payment, some routine business was done, and a vole of thanks was accorded to the secretary for his services during the past year.
