The nomination for councillor to fill ihc vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr J. Hollows, took place last Friday. Mr Wm. Coulter, proposed by Mr C. E. Yates, seconded by Mr A. Weston, being the only person nominated, was declared elected. Mr G. Middlemas, contractor, has secured the tender for building the new pavilion at the recreation ground, at a cost of over and will start operations as soon as possible. The dimensions are 32 x 22, and studs 18ft. The building is to be finished about the first week in October.
Mr Chas. M'Veigh has gone to considerable expense in renovating and decorating his property, and by the time the new lessee takes charge, about the middle of the month, the building, decorations, and furnishings, which is in the capable hands of Mr Middle mass, will have all the requisites of a comfortable and up-to-date hotel, and very suitable for the requiremepts of patrons. It is hoped such improvements will add to the good reputation the Club Hotel now enjoys. The Kaitangata Ist grade asssociation team played their return match against Waikari on Saturday, on the Mornington ground, and after a hardfought game resulted in a draw, each side scoring two goals. The ex-New Zealand crack half-back, the genial Geordie Middlemas, donned the green for the jfirst timl' this season for his old club, and played one of his characteristic games. The result of Saturday's match puts Kaitangata out of a chance for first place for the cup. The result of the next game will decide who plays off with Northern in the chaiity J?anner competition. George Taylor was disqualified for the rest of the season for his language to the referee on the previous Saturday on the Kaitangata Recreation Ground, in the match against Northern.
The third grade association team also played® a match in Dunedin last Saturday, against a picked representative 3rd grade team, and were defeated by 6 goals to 2. The opposition was too strong and superior to the calibre of the visitors.
The'annual ball of the Kaitangata Rifles was held in M'Kay's Hall on Thursday evening last. There was a large attendance, including a number of visitors from various corps in the district. Messrs G. Beath (violin) and Yates (piano) supplied all that was desirable in excellent music for trippers of the light fantastic. Sergts W. T. h'mith, H. Bryce, and J. Wilson fulfilled the duties of M.C. efficiently During an interval in the proceedings the Mayor presented the prizes wofT by members of the corps in the various shooting competitions during the past season. ~ ' ~ .
