A Record Ploughing Bee.
■."-•■— - — — *-- ■ — ■" (By,a Casual Correspondent.) . ' The settlers of Bruce have always been noted for their kindness of he,art in giving a day's ploughing to anyone taking up a farm in the district. I think however, the turnout at Lovells Flat on Wednesday at Messrs Andrew Hewitson's farm to give them a day's ploughing was a record, and goes to show that they, like their father, Mr' Robert , Hewitson are widely respected. Just fancy, there were 28 teams present with a total of 108 horses, some of them valuable prize-winners ;' these at low value represent £$0 each j a total value of These on a zoo acre farm in one day was a sight worth going a long distance to see. The • friendly manner in which all the farmers worked in trying to outvie each other was also a most pleasing feature of the. day's • ploughing ■ and the acreage turned over and the quality qf work done was pleasing to behold. It is actions such as these that speak more than words and show a settler his true friends. Too much praise cannot be given the Miss Hewitson's for the quality and quantity of the viands placed upon the large table in the barn, which was specially prepared for the occasion, and the gracefulness and agility these ladies displayed in attending to the wants of all. It is safe to-say that they excelled the waitresses at the Dunedin show, and quite placed them in the shade. I trust you will insert this in the columns of your widely'circulated -.paper, so that it may act as an incentive to other centres to do likewise — as everything here on Wednesday went with a hum from start to finish, and was a picnic to all whowere present.
