Fairfax Concert

The benefit conceit, in aid of the widow and family of the late Mr J. R. Parlane, took place in the Fairfax School on Friday night, when the building was packed to the door. Considering there was no expense, it is estimated that the amount to be handed over will be from to The manager of the Royal Waxworks (Mr J. E. Petherick) on learning that he had a rival in the shape of a benefit concert, immediately volunteered to render assistance by sending two of his talented performers (Messrs Aubrey Douglas and Harry Bcresford), who were well received, and materially helped to make the entertainment a complete success. The other performers were as follows : — Songs : Misses -Wight' ("The Carnival"), M'Donald (" Clorine "), Martin ("Twickenham Ferry) ; Messrs A. M'Bey (" O' a' the Airts," " Mary," ■ and, by request, " Hielan Rorie "), D. Hutton, Dunedin, (" Skipper," " Braes o' Mar," " Annie Laurie "), W. Keen (" Whisper my Name to Nell"), T. Leaven ("A Picture no Artist Can Paint," " Sunny Tennessee "), G. Simpson (" John Peel "), T. Mills and P. Boyle (" Comicalities "). Recitations : Messrs John Parlane (" The Last Shot "), A. Bryce (" The Pride of Battery B "). The school children contributed two action songs under the direction of Mr Mahoney. Mr R. Robertson acted as accompanist. At the conclusion of the programme, Mr G. T. Martin, in a capital speech, thanked the audience for their attendance, and moved a hearty vote of thanks to the performers, the Bruce Herald (for free printing and advertising), and all who had gratuitiously assisted the good cause. Mr J. Parlane, on behalf of Messrs J. R. Parlane and family, thanked everyone for the assistance which had been so willingly given. At this stage a start was made with the dancing, which was kept up till the small hours, and was terminated with a verse of " Auld Lang Syne." Messrs J. Walsh, J. Powley and E. Martin supplied excellent music for the dancing.
