Fatal Railway Accident.
Ernest Venn, fireman on -the midday goods train, which leaves Milton for the South at half-past one, met with a fatal accident at the Stoney Creek ' overbridge, near Benhar Station, on Tuesday last. He went to the back end of the tender to shovel the heaped-up-coals forward a little, and as the bridge is very, low down — in fact, just room enough for the engine to pass- under — the unfortunate man- collided with it, was thrown on to grounti'- and terribly mangled. The driver .stopped th.c train immediately, and Venn was picked up beside the guard's van quite dead. Deceased was a young man residing in Dunedin, and was married only six weeks ago. -It will be remembered that a 'similar accident with the same result occured at this" bridge six months ago, while another 'fireman was severely injured a short time back. An inquest was held in Dunedin on Wednesday before Mr Coroner Graham, and the jury returned a verdict that deceased met his death through coming into contact with a railway overbridge, he being knocked off a train while in motion. The jury further found that no blame was attachable to anyone.
