SPOOLS MADE FROM PULP.
Material Now Used in the Manufacture oi the Reels of Larger vt Size. The process of making spools from pulp has been in course — -" development for the past two years, and many obstacles have had to be overcome be fore the spool was perfected. It wai comparatively easy to mold the spoo', inro the proper form, but after it haf become dry and hard the difficulty wa? to ftrind or turn it into the prope sv/.e to hold the required amount o thread. This trouble has now beeovercome, reports the Hartford Con r-i7't. Pulp will be used only for th lar^e size of spools, as it is not prac tical to make the smaller spools o tlmt material. Many of the large spools are nearl; forr inches in diameter and up to th<present time they have been made o ! ' v.ood. When they were first made the: were turned from a single piece o; wood, but it was discovered that i" many cases the pressure oii tho threa as it was wound on the spo >1 won! ■ push the head off the barrel, although it was the same piece of wood. In order to remedy this difficulty, it becarrrnecessary to make the large spool from three pieces, the barrel and th f two heads, and when the heads werr closely fitted to the barrel and glued, they were found to remain better than when they were one piece of wood.
