ABOUT OUR PONIES.
Sir Walter Gilbey gives an interesting account of the origin of the different breeds of ponies, and their history. The Shetland pony was introduced? iby Scandinavians in the 15tb century.. "The ponies,"' Sir Walter says, "&re docile, easily trained to domestic use when kindly treated, and,, being hardy and muscular, ar<. capable of enduring much drudgery. There is W considerable trade in Shetland ponies, the demaud for thorn having greatly increased of late yearfor working underground in cord pits, and many other purposes. They are the more" valued for such uses, as, in proportion to their small stature, they have, great strength, can subsist upoi.' scanty food, and can stand rough and 1 careless treatment. They are docile and manageable in the pit, and manv of them do 30 miles -per day, the weight of the load, tilt and coals, being generally from 12 to 14 cwt.
