*?>— The monthly meeting of the above was held in the Municipal Chambers on Wednesday evening, Present — The Mayor, Crs Robertson, Murphy, Grey King, Lockhart, M'Kechnie. Reid applied on behalf of the National Insurance Company for a portion of the risk on the Town Hall. The writer explained that Mr Orr Campbell had insured in that office during construction, and to save the heavy premiums payable on short dated policies, had paid the usual annual fee on each policy, on the understanding that he would receive a full rebate on the National, securing a share of the risk, which sum Mr Campbell would lose unless the Council granted the request. Mr Orr Campbell also wrote to the Council to the same effect, and pointed out that he had paid annual premiums on several policies aggregating £2000, and that the rebate amounted to a large sum of money. His Worship stated that no steps could be taken in the matter, as a policy had been taken out in the Alliance Co., which he (Mr Moore) represented. Cr Murphy wanted to know who had given his Worship authority to insure in tbat Co. His Worship said no one had given him authority, and went on to say that on Mr Reid ringing him up on the telephone, he had stated to him the position of affairs. The matter then dropped. From Mr H. White requesting a refund of . £1 14s for rntes paid on a hall which had been used for religious purposes only. i The town clerk reported that no | rates had been charged on the hall the last year, 'though part of that time it j had been used as a billiard soloon. He thought nothing should be done. | From Mr G. H. Thomson requesting that the Council take steps to remove the water from Mr Duncan Chisholm's land, as it had been backed-up by repairs - to the road' made by the Council V day man, and threatening proceedings in default of the fulfilment of? the request. — Left in the hands of the Works Committee. " From the Secretary of the Milton Fire Brigade requesting that the Council grant the Brigade a. room in the new hall, in which to hold their fortnightly meetings. -Resolved that the ticket room be granted for such meetings. GENERA!.. Crs Grey and King were elected as metrfbers uf the Finance Committee.. Cr Murphy stated that an expanse of water 63 yards long and two feet wide lay in the gutter opposite the Presbyterian Church. Or King said this was a great nuisance, and that in the dark he and others had often stepped into the water.— Resolved that the dayman's attention should be drawn to this matter. Cr Murphy further stated that the footpaths were in a scandalous state owing to horse and cow excreta. He thought the Inspector of Nuisance should be more vigilant, and stop horses and cows being allowed to wander about the sfcreetg at night, and ridiculed the idea of 10s extra being paid for each report sent in, A stranger remarked to him _that the Woollen Factory street footpath was disgusting, and not fit to walk on. Cr Murphy further stated that the street on the border of the town, leading down to Mrs Kirby's, was badly in- need of a new footpath, as the 3ft walk had got so covered with grass and weeds that there was only Ift left to walk on. — .Resolved that the dayman should attend to the clearing of the footpath.
