His Worship reported that the Borough reserve at -Fairfax had been let to Mr W. A. Lilburne as from February ist. Cr Taylor asked if nuisance complained of by Mr Dickson at last meeting arising from Reed's yards bad .been abated.— His Worship said that instructions had been given, and he understood that the work had been done., - .CORRESPONDENCE. Mr J. G. Jieywood, Treasury Department, forwarded remit of 10s for stamps; -from Magistrate's Court for quarter ending 31st March. — Received. Mr J. S. Inglis, wrote on behalf of the Deacons, . Court, Presbyterian Church, regretting that the Council had gone back on its promise to erect a lamp in front of the church, and suggested that a way out ot the difficulty would be found if the lamp at Johnstone's corner were removed and placed on the opposite side of the street in front of the church. A deputation .would wait upon the Council. — Mr R. C. Black attended the meeting, and said that two other gentlemen were appointed, but had failed to attend. He said that the church committee had applied for the lamp about a year ago, and the Council granted the application, but had since rescinded the resolution. . Now the winter was on persons attending the church services and other gatherings, felt the inconvenience and discomfort of crossing the road in the dark. Personally, he thought two lamps should be erected near the church gates. The church officiais hoped the Council would favorably consider the application. — His Worship said that it was a most unusual thing in any town to erect lamps opposite each other. The resolution granting the lamp was hurried through without due consideration, but when it was again brought up the Council gave the matter careful thought, and decided to rescind the resolution. •Another matter was that church property did not assist the borough finances in any way. He took exception to the request that the lamp be shifted from Johnstone's corner, but if the trustees of the church procured Messrs' Ross and Johnstone's permission to remove the lamp, the Council would have no objection. — Mr Black said that where the lamp was required was one of the busiest parts of the town; the trustees of the church did not consider their funds sufficient to warrant the erection of a lamp. Mr Black thanked the members and retired. — On the motion of Cr Murphy, seconded by Cr King, it was decided that a copy of the resolution of last meeting rescinding the first motion, be forwarded to the trustees. The clerk to the Bruce Licensing Committee notified that the Committee had recommended for favorable consideration, that the license fees' of the four hotelkeepers in the borough be reduced to- one-twelfth, as the licenses expire on the 30th inst. — Cr Bastings considered that if the Council had power they ought to reduce the .license fee. as it was only fair and equitable that the fee should be reduced. He understood that some action was being taken in the Supreme Court on the matter.— After a little discussion it was decided, on the motion of Cr Murphy, seconded by Cr M'Kechnie, that the matter be held over in the meantime. Milburn Lime and Cement Co. notified that they were prepared to supply cement pipes. — Received. Wm. Moffatt, junr., applied for permission to remove photographic studio and engine shed»ori a sledge along the streets of the town. — Granted.
